Now I feel justified in my insistence on repeatedly repairing my 1983 vintage Maytag dryer and on keeping and using my mother’s 1986 Kitchenaid mixer. I felt like I was being unreasonably sentimental but actually I was making a good decision. The ‘80s were really nothing to write home about, especially the hairstyles, but small and large appliances were still manufactured in the US. Mine still work. At least they’re almond colored, not harvest gold or avocado green. Thank you for this.

You threw away his toaster? You go girl!

I always called it planned obsolescence but “enshittification” is a much better descriptor for this malignancy resulting from corporate greed.
